Both the Hinton Pulp and Cariboo Pulp & Paper mills are modern kraft pulp mills. Our Quesnel River Pulp and Slave Lake Pulp BCTMP operations have state of the art effluent treatment systems. Reinvestment in our pulping operations and upgrades made in recent years have incorporated new technologies to reduce energy consumption, as well as significantly reducing emissions and the impact of effluents on water quality.
All of West Fraser's NBSK pulp is elemental chlorine-free (ECF). It means we use no chlorine gas in bleaching or processing pulp. As a result, we have reduced dioxins and furans (pulp manufacturing by-products) to below measurable levels and significantly reduced adsorbable organic halides (AOX) in treated mill effluent.
We continuously monitor mill discharges and effluents and monitor the surrounding water for impacts on aquatic life and water quality.
Slave Lake Pulp monitors its water use carefully and remains one of the lowest water consumers in its sector.
We continuously work to reduce pulp mill odours, gaseous emissions, and particulates.
In 1999, Cariboo Pulp & Paper achieved certification to ISO 14001, a management tool to ensure consistent and efficient achievement of environmental objectives.? Cariboo Pulp & Paper has been successfully recertified to this standard in 2013.
In addition to West Fraser's Environmental Policy, Cariboo Pulp & Paper maintains an environmental policy at the facility that strives for continual improvement in environmental performance. Cariboo's environmental policy is available by?contacting the mill.
Hinton Pulp achieved ISO 14001 certification in November 2000 and was recertified to this standard in 2006.? Hinton first received recognition and certification for its forestry practices under the Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA) ForestCare program in 1996.
Slave Lake Pulp continues to improve its environmental performance. Advancements in the strategies employed to address the biological health of the mill's treatment system in 2012 have resulted in the mill defining new excellence in environmental performance.? The strategic environmental improvements have greatly enhanced Slave Lake Pulp's ability to remain well within regulated limits for key measures of biological oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS), and colour.
