Environmental Specifications

Environmental Certification

All of the Company's Canadian woodlands operations directly managed by West Fraser are independently certified to the?Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) fiber sourcing and forest management standards. SFI is an internationally-recognized sustainable forest management certification program.?

Our pulp mills?are?PEFC certified?and?certified to ISO 9001 for Quality.?Hinton Pulp, Cariboo Pulp & Paper, and Quesnel River Pulp are all certified ISO 14001 for environment. Slave Lake Pulp is certified for environment through Alberta Forest Care, an EMS equivalent.?

Chain of Custody Certification and Controlled Wood

In 2006, West Fraser introduced the?PEFC Chain of Custody?system.?It demonstrates to customers that the fibre in our Canadian operations supply chain comes from sources that comply with applicable laws, regulations, and sustainable resource standards. The standard also demonstrates the avoidance of sourcing fibre from controversial sources.? In addition to PEFC Chain of Custody certification, all of West Fraser's pulp operations are registered to the?Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC?) Standard for Chain of Custody Certification.?

West Fraser's pulp operations have been registered to the Forest Stewardship Council's (FSC) Standard for Chain of Custody Certification. All of our pulp operations and the Company's MDF operations are part of a multi-site chain of custody certificate under the FSC Standard for Multi-Site Certification of Chain of Custody Operations (KF-COC-001045), as well as the Standard for Company Evaluation of FSC Controlled Wood (KF-CW-001045).

FSC's National Risk Assessments assess risks associated with undesirable forestry activities on non-FSC certified lands, including illegal harvest, forest management that violates workers or Indigenous Peoples’ rights or threatens High Conservation Values, conversion of forest to non-forest uses, and use of genetically-modified trees. In the Canadian National Risk Assessment,?the primary risks identified are related to Indigenous Peoples’ rights, critical habitat for species at risk (including woodland caribou), and Intact Forest Landscapes. The FSC Canada National Risk Assessment identifies measures for how companies can mitigate these risks. The?FSC?Controlled Wood Due Diligence System (DDS) Summary?identifies the control measures selected by West Fraser to demonstrate low risk to these values.
